UN Raises Alarm Over Escalating Violence in S. Lebanon Despite Ceasefire

(MENAFN) According to reports, the United Nations voiced serious concern on Monday over the worsening security situation in southern Lebanon, where tensions continue to rise despite an existing US-brokered ceasefire. The organization urged all involved parties to adhere strictly to the agreement and prevent further deterioration.

A UN spokesperson told reporters during a regular briefing that the situation on the ground had become increasingly troubling, especially amid warnings of possible new Israeli strikes targeting areas in Beirut’s southern suburbs, which have contributed to growing fear and instability among civilians.

The spokesperson stated: "We are deeply alarmed by the escalation in military activities across southern Lebanon and beyond."

He further emphasized the impact of recent threats, saying: "Israeli warnings of imminent strikes on Beirut's southern suburbs are deeply concerning and have heightened fear and uncertainty among the population in Lebanon."

Reiterating the UN’s position on the protection of civilians, he said: "civilians and civilian infrastructure must not be targeted."

He also called for restraint from all sides, adding: "respect the cessation of hostilities and avoid further escalation."

Condemning the human cost of the ongoing violence, he said: "We condemn all the loss of civilian lives."

He stressed that diplomacy remains the only viable path forward, stating: "There is no alternative to a diplomatic solution to break the cycle of violence and to achieve sustainable stability on both sides of the blue line."

The spokesperson also highlighted upcoming diplomatic efforts, noting that US-backed talks between Lebanon and Israel, scheduled to resume on Tuesday, should be allowed to proceed without disruption and given every opportunity to succeed, saying:
"must be given a real chance to succeed."
